What is laser posterior capsulotomy?

Laser posterior capsulotomy is a procedure that corrects the posterior capsule opacification (lens clouding) that sometimes occurs following cataract surgery. In this procedure, Dr. Lai applies anesthetic eye drops and then uses the laser to create a tiny hole in the cloudy portion of the lens capsule.

This hole creates an opening so light can get to your retina and give you clear vision again. Laser posterior capsulotomy is a safe, effective procedure that can restore excellent vision if you have a clouded artificial lens after cataract surgery.

When do I need laser glaucoma surgery?

If you suffer from narrow angle glaucoma — a condition in which your iris moves forward and blocks proper fluid drainage in your eye — Dr. Lai may recommend a procedure called laser peripheral iridotomy to safely reduce your eye pressure. During this procedure, Dr. Lai uses a state-of-the-art laser to create a tiny hole within your iris.

This hole reduces pressure by giving your intraocular fluid an escape route, allowing your front-of-the-eye pressure to balance with the back-of-the-eye pressure. Peripheral iridotomy is a reliable and safe procedure that can prevent similar attacks in the future.

What should I expect from laser surgery?

Laser surgery generally takes less than 10 minutes per eye. You’re awake during the procedure, but you receive numbing eye drops and maybe a mild sedative pill to help you relax.

During laser surgery, Dr. Lai uses a device to gently hold your eyes open so you don’t blink. He then performs the necessary corrections, during which you may feel a small amount of pressure, but the procedure should be painless.

After the laser procedure, you generally wait for 30-60 minutes, and then Dr. Lai checks your intraocular (inner eye) pressure to ensure that it's at a safe and healthy level. If you have slight intraocular pressure elevation, Dr. Lai may administer eye drops to help lower the pressure. You can then return home, although be sure to arrange for someone to drive you.

Following laser surgery, you may experience temporary blurry vision, a grainy sensation in your eyes, or minor discomfort. These symptoms usually resolve rapidly, allowing you to return to your regular routine in as little as a day or two.
